What about God’s Voice?

What does God’s voice sound like to you? Have you ever heard Him? Is it deep? Is it a whisper? Is it a thought? I think God “sounds” different to everyone. I don’t think everyone hears Him in a voice. For me it has been different. Sometimes I feel Him in a thought, or something I see. Sometimes it is an idea that just “pops” into my head and I can’t seem to get it out. Sometimes God uses someone else to tell me something or point me in a direction.
I have had many times where I just wanted God to tell me what to do or what decision to make. I wanted to KNOW that I was in God’s will for me. I used to be a very “black or white” person. Everything is either right or it is wrong. It is either good or it is bad. I like things in their area and I like decisions that are very cut and dry. But as I get older, I realize that there are many decisions I have to make that are both choices are right, or both good.
There have also been many times where I felt unheard or like God was so far away and not talking to me. I wanted to hear Him so bad and I tried so hard to listen and get Him to talk to me. I think God talks to me all the time, but He uses different ways and I don’t always look or listen in the way He is speaking. Sometimes I think I am really trying to listen, but the truth is my mind is somewhere else or I don’t want to hear what He has to say, so I don’t listen.
I love word pictures and many times God speaks to me that way. The other day a friend sent me information on Bamboo. Bamboo takes 5 years before you even see a hint that it is growing.
During those years, its root system is being built. It grows so fast so quickly that it needs a deep and strong root system to support itself. There are so many lessons that can be learned from that. Many times when we are growing our faith, it is hard to see the growth. But if we develop a deep root system and learn to always lean on Jesus, then when we go through our growth spurt we will have the roots to support us in a storm. Or maybe you can see it as, when you are witnessing to non-believers, you never know what is growing below the surface. But if you keep taking care of them and talking to them, you might just be building a root system that is searching for the truth and will grow an amazing strong Christian. There are so many lessons we could get from one picture. But how many times so we not see what is around us? How many times are we in too much of a hurry to just listen or look around us?
I am a high school counselor. There are days where my job is so stressful and busy that I just don’t feel like I have time to stop and listen to one more person complain about what is happening in their life. But that is part of my job too. Sometimes we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget, or don’t take time to stop and listen to God.
I think God can speak to us on a basketball court, or a soccer( football) field, in a crowd, at school, in a bus, through a friend, in a child laughing, through a mom’s hug, through a book, in a storm, in a picture, through music, in nature, or … it is limitless. Too often I put limits on God. Does it have to be during my quiet time with God that He speaks to me? Maybe He wants me to listen all that time and not just at one specific time. I want to take time to listen, do you?
